Tech giants Google, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI and others have launched the Coalition for Secure AI (CoSAI) to address concerns about AI safety. Announced at the Aspen Security Forum, CoSAI aims to establish robust security frameworks and standards for AI development and deployment. The effort comes at a critical time as the AI landscape continues to rapidly evolve.
Google launches CoSAI to improve AI safety
Spearheaded by Google, CoSAI brings together leading technology companies and organizations to tackle the challenges of AI security, and according to the announcement, founding members include Amazon, Anthropic, Cisco, Cohere, IBM, Intel, Microsoft, Nvidia, OpenAI, PayPal and Wiz.
Notably, the coalition aims to leverage open source methodologies and standardized frameworks to promote trust and security in AI and build AI systems that are secure by design. The announcement highlighted the importance of a security framework for artificial intelligence (AI), building on the previously introduced Secure AI Framework (SAIF).
CoSAI aims to advance a comprehensive AI security approach and address both current and emerging risks. Additionally, the coalition will focus on three initial workstreams: software supply chain security for AI systems, defender readiness for the changing cybersecurity landscape, and AI security governance.
These workstreams aim to develop best practices, risk assessment frameworks, and mitigation strategies to strengthen AI security across the industry.

Focus on AI Security
The formation of CoSAI addresses the fragmented landscape of AI security: currently, developers face inconsistent and siloed guidelines that make it difficult to assess and mitigate AI-specific risks.
But CoSAI aims to standardize practices, strengthen security measures, and build trust among stakeholders around the world. David LaBianca, Co-chair of the CoSAI board of directors at Google, emphasized the need to democratize knowledge and progress for safe AI integration. He said:
CoSAI was founded out of the need to democratize the knowledge and advancements essential to the safe integration and deployment of AI.
Cisco's Omar Santos echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between leading companies and experts to develop strong AI security standards: The CoSAI open source community welcomes technical contributions from all interested parties.
OASIS, the global standards organization that hosts CoSAI, is also seeking additional sponsorship support from companies involved in AI development and deployment.
As AI technology continues to advance, CoSAI's role in establishing standardized security practices will become increasingly important. By addressing the inherent risks associated with AI systems, CoSAI aims to ensure that AI development and deployment is done responsibly and securely.
