Google is forced to pause another AI feature for its users.
Google's AI journey went at a steady pace, but the company once again managed to score a hurdle with Openai in this race. Google has released an AI-powered Ask Photos feature that runs within the Photos app, and has decided to pause user rollouts for multiple reasons.
I first learned about asking for photos at I/O 2024 last year, but Google was leaning widely to fix the issue before it became available in the market. However, the new report suggests that the problem still exists, and users will need to wait a little longer before getting the full tilt with the new AI feature. But why did the rollout pause?
Why do you ask for paused photos?
Google's product manager recently shared the news via a post on X and also stated the reasons for this decision. Jamie Aspinall argues that the ASK AI feature faces problems related to latency, quality, and overall experience of how the AI tools provided the results. Essentially, according to Aspinall, the photos seem to be a fair call rather than a place they need to be published.
Based on your photo questions, it helps you answer questions about photos, helps you understand the context of your visuals and get text from your images. He also pointed out that the rollout was paused for a very few users, which could be hundreds or even thousands, depending on how well the release was being offered.
The good news is that Google has already tackled the issues facing photography, and Aspinall claims that a new, sophisticated version of the tool will be available in about two weeks.
AI glitch continues
Google and other companies face problems with AI capabilities. The photos are up to date to ensure that the release is pending. The company was facing errors and hallucinations last year with its AI overview and AI image generation tools, which forced it to apologise to the company and stop its release before it was even more depressed by the market.
Apple also faced the issue of AI news summary tools that created news details and did not share actual news with users. The company decided this week to take a new AI update in its keynote speech at WWDC 2025. I hope that issues like these and issues will become headlines in the coming months.
