New advancements in the tech stack are making the developer’s world bigger and more exciting. As organizations consider the past, present, and future state of their applications, developers have many choices about how to manage their projects. Traditional applications are under increasing pressure to modernize to increase operational efficiency. And moving to the cloud is often the focus of organizations. However, not all apps should be refactored.
The Google I/O 2023 keynote taught us that the devil is in the details. New advances in AI will improve the lives of billions and help grow organizations and societies. And according to Google, the use of AI will make apps useful for everyone.
New enhancements to Google AI
Several announcements included a number of generative AI updates, including the launch of a general-purpose, large-scale language model and highlighting how it can help with application development. This should come as no surprise to me as I highlighted this in his 2023 prediction blog.
During his Google I/O keynote, Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted how generative AI could bring significant improvements to Google products. He highlighted the many areas where the development team is building enhanced applications across his Google portfolio.
Here are some enhancements:
- G-mail. In addition to Smart Compose, Help Me Write is a new feature that auto-generates emails that reply to existing emails and is available as a new Workspace update.
- google map. Immersive View, previewed last year, powers the direction. Get a bird’s eye view of direction, air quality, traffic and weather. It plans to launch in 15 cities by the end of the year.
- Google Photos. The app now allows users to search for photos of people and other things. Google edits 1.7 billion photos every month. A magic eraser can remove unwanted distractions. The Magic Editor — a new product slated to roll out later this year — modifies the picture to heighten the expected anticipation.
These enhancements to our portfolio will allow developers to see where generative AI can enhance their applications and the developer experience. These examples also illustrate how using AI can improve knowledge and learning, increase productivity, enable developers to innovate, and how AI can be used responsibly. It shows if it can be used. It’s clear that the worlds of AI and application development are colliding.
PaLM2 release
Another enhancement is PaLM 2, a new language model currently in preview, supporting over 100 languages. It has been operating under the internal code name Unified Language Model. There was also extensive coding and math testing, as well as creative writing testing and analysis. His latest PaLM2 model powers 25 products and features across various platforms. It provides multilingual text capabilities and enables developers to collaborate globally. Security-focused Sec-PaLM was also released. Med-PaLM 2 focuses on medical use cases to improve outcomes. Bard and Search Advances
Google shared progress on search with generative experiences with automated collaborator Bard. The announcement includes Bard being used for coding, math and logic. There is a multimodal version called Multi-Bard that uses larger data sets and solves complex math and coding programs. Google DeepMind, which focuses on building safe and responsible models, was also noted. Pichai said that DeepMind and the Google Research Brain team will work together as a single, focused unit to solve the greatest challenges facing humanity. It’s a great growth area.
Impact of AI on developers
To use AI responsibly, Google has introduced protections for AI-generated content, including watermarks and metadata. Google AI’s approach is also bold, responsible, and focused on product development. Google has outlined seven principles for responsible AI use and will evaluate AI applications by asking, “Can the application be used to do harm?”
Although this post focuses on AI, it has a great impact on the application developer community. While these advances can be viewed as areas where the technology stack is converging, it is also important to understand how technology evolves and changes the way developers create applications.
I wrote an article focusing on GPT and its impact on application development, but after attending Google I/O 2023, I learned how and how generative AI is being used for new software development. There is a clear convergence in terms of Google has a huge impact on the development community, and by building a responsible approach to new code development practices, we can advance the future of code development.
