  • According to a study by SE Ranking, Google's AI Overviews link to Wikipedia and LinkedIn more than Reddit.
  • The SEO platform's research analyzed 100,000 keywords and uncovered changes in linked domains.
  • Google is taking a more cautious approach following some viral online gaffes, such as recommending people put glue on their pizza.

It looks like Google has been tweaking its AI overview.

New research from SE Ranking has found that the company's AI-generated summaries now link more to Wikipedia and LinkedIn than to Reddit.

The SEO marketing platform analyzed 100,000 keywords in June and discovered that Reddit was no longer ranked within the top 10 linked domains in Google's AI overview.

Google reportedly signed a deal with Reddit earlier this year to train AI models on Reddit content.

Google appears to be taking a more cautious approach to AI Overviews by prioritizing other websites it links to rather than forums like Reddit, following a series of publicly-publicized mishaps caused by AI Overviews after its public release last month.

In one incident, it instructed users to put glue on their pizza to stop the cheese from crumbling, a suggestion that appeared to be based on a Reddit comment from over a decade ago.

According to a study by SE Ranking, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, and YouTube rank third, fourth, and sixth, respectively, among the top 10 linked domains.

The SEO tool provider conducted a similar study in February, before Google made its AI features publicly available, and found that the synopsis included numerous excerpts from forums on Reddit and Quora.

Google showed significantly less of its AI overview, formerly known as SGE (Search Generative Experience), in its June survey than it did in its February survey.

Of the 1,000 keywords analyzed, less than 9% had an AI summary in June, but 64% had an SGE answer or generate button. In February, SGE was most often linked to Reddit for keywords related to entertainment and hobbies.

Google appears to be continuing to roll out its AI overview, as audio shows VP of Search Liz Reid addressing the pizza glue fiasco in a recent all-hands meeting. Obtained by CNBC The company said it would not “throttle” the feature “even if occasional issues arise.”

Google did not immediately respond to Business Insider's request for comment, made outside of regular working hours.
