Notebooklm, a Google research tool that gained notoriety for its AI-generated podcasts, introduces a feature called Video Overview. As the name suggests, the tool automatically creates videos according to the requested topic and extracts data from the user's uploaded images, diagrams, quotes and documents.
It's now being unfolded, but there are some caveats to keep in mind. These overviews are available in English only, but Google says more languages are ongoing. Furthermore, this tool does not create videos in the traditional sense. Create a slideshow with narration.
Despite this limitation, the company says the feature is “uniquely effective in describing data, demonstrating processes, and making it more concrete in abstract concepts.” Google also says it will expand its toolset in the future, so it won't always be a slideshow machine.
The video overview currently offers several useful playback options. It has the ability to skip back and forth at 10 seconds to adjust the playback speed. The company is also updating its studio tabs on Notebooklm. You get visual updates and will be rolled out to all users “in the coming weeks.”
Google has been busy repeating it on the platform for the past few months. The official notebook Lum app was released in May, and earlier this month we began offering curated “Featured Notebooks.” This allows users to experiment with the platform using pre-approved topics like William Shakespeare, so beginners don't actually need to upload anything. Audio-only overviews are now available in over 50 languages.
