Google Today has enhanced the VEO 3 AI model with new image-to-video image capabilities, allowing users to convert one photo into an 8-second video clip with sound. The feature is being deployed through the Gemini app to subscribers of the company's AI Pro and AI Ultra plan.

Users can upload static images and animate them into short, dynamic videos using descriptive text prompts. This update has produced over 40 million videos in just seven weeks as Google reports an impressive early adoption of VEO 3.

This move is an important part of Google's strategy to add tangible values ​​to the recently simplified subscription layer. This solidifies the push to make advanced generation AI tools a daily resource following the global launch of VEO 3's text-to-video features last week.

From still images to videos

The VEO 3, a core technology, represents an important technological leap. The ability to generate synchronous audio, including dialogue and surrounding effects, is a key differentiator. Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google Deepmind, has been working on this model. “We've emerged from a quiet era of video production.”

This addresses the big hurdles when it comes to making AI-generated videos feel completely out of the box. Watermark and safety commitment

In a direct response to industry-wide concerns about deepfakes and misinformation, Google incorporates SynthID watermark technology into all VEO 3 outputs. This is an unnegotiable part of the generation process for all users.

All generated videos contain two layers of identification. A visible “Veo” watermark for immediate recognition and an invisible SynthID digital signature designed to be robust to common modifications such as cropping and compression.

This dual approach is central to Google's publishing for responsible AI development. The company aims to provide transparency and enable clear identification of content generated by AI. It's an important step as these tools become more powerful.

However, the solution is not indefinite. An independent study from the University of Maryland found that watermarks could be vulnerable to manipulation. The researchers concluded, “While transparency efforts provide the value of transparency, they do not provide absolute security for AI-generated content manipulation.” It highlights the ongoing technical weapons race between generation and detection.

A clearer subscription strategy

This feature highlights Google's improved AI monetization strategy. This was made clear in May by abolishing confusing brand names such as “Gemini Advanced” and “AI Premium.” The overhaul was designed to end the long-standing brand turmoil and create a clearer value proposition.

The $19.99/month AI Pro plan is positioned as a mainstream offering. It offers users 2 TB of storage, a Gemini 2.5 Pro model, and 1,000 monthly AI credits. “Abundant space for creative exploration.”
