HYDERABAD: A video claiming to show the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 1,950 people is going viral on social media. In the video, you can see a huge swing that looks like an amusement park swing falling off a cliff.

It shows a large crowd gathered on the edge of a cliff observing and recording the incident. The swing cabin is filled with people supported by thick cables and support structures. When the cable snaps, the ship appears to rock outward on the cliff, and the cabin falls off the cliff.

“The swing collapsed, killing 1,950 people. One mistake led to the death of all,” the video says in Hindi. This video was shared on YouTube. (archive)

fact check

NewsMeter has found that this viral claim is false. Videos are generated using artificial intelligence (AI).

A keyword search found no news reports or credible social media posts about people falling off cliffs on giant swings at amusement parks.

We performed a reverse image search of the viral video's keyframes and found the same footage uploaded to YouTube on September 23rd. The video's caption reads: “Tourists face heart-stopping moment after cliff swing malfunctions.”

In the description, the video is flagged as “altered or synthetic content,” meaning the sound or visuals have been heavily edited or digitally generated.

Video analysis

Upon close analysis of the video, we found several discrepancies.

When the cabin shakes and the support cable breaks, some distortion is observed in the cable before it disappears completely. Below is an image showing the progress of this.

AI detection tool Hive Moderation has determined that this video has a 99.9% chance of containing AI-generated or deepfake content.

Therefore, it is clear that this video does not depict an actual incident in which a giant swing-like structure fell off a cliff, killing thousands of people. The viral video was generated by AI. NewsMeter concludes that this viral claim is false.
