Ministry of Communications, Digital Technologies and Innovation Reached agreement with Huawei Technologies Provide free artificial intelligence (AI) training to girls in Ghana under the government’s flagship ICT for Girls programme.
The agreement was signed during a meeting between Ghana’s Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation Samuel Nalty-George and Stephen Yee on the sidelines of the 2026 Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain.
This initiative expands on the current Girls in ICT program by introducing a dedicated AI training module for participants. Approximately 3,000 girls are expected to benefit from the training this year, which will be conducted in collaboration with the Ghana Electronics and Communications Investment Fund, Huawei’s Ghana office, and the ministry.
Beyond skills development, discussions at the conference also focused on broader opportunities within Ghana’s digital ecosystem. Huawei has expressed interest in several national technology initiatives, including a planned US$250 million AI computing center, expanding the rural telephone network, and rolling out 5G infrastructure in the country.
The talks also explored the possibility of establishing a handheld device assembly plant in Ghana to manufacture affordable smart devices for local and regional markets. The proposal is in line with a broader effort led by the GSMA and several original equipment manufacturers to introduce smartphones priced around $40 across Africa.
The proposed facility could support efforts to improve smartphone affordability and increase adoption of advanced mobile services. Although Ghana has achieved high 4G network coverage, the affordability of smartphones remains a barrier to widespread use of mobile broadband services.
If implemented, this device assembly project could help expand access to 4G and future 5G services, while strengthening Ghana’s position as a regional technology hub in West Africa.
