– 40% of enterprise applications will be integrated with task-specific AI agents by 2026, up from below 5% today, according to Gartner Inc. of Business and Technology Insights Company. As organizations accelerate their digital transformation, agent AI in enterprise applications moves beyond individual productivity, setting new standards for teamwork and workflows to smarter human agent interactions.

Gartner's forecast agent AI will drive approximately 30% of enterprise application software revenue by 2035, surpassing $450 billion from 2% in 2025.

“AI agents are evolving rapidly, evolving from basic assistants embedded in today's enterprise applications, to task-specific agents by 2026 and ultimately a multi-agent ecosystem by 2029.” “This shift translates enterprise applications from tools that support individual productivity into platforms, enabling seamless autonomous collaboration and dynamic workflow orchestration.”

CIOs have an important 3-6 month window to define agent AI strategies, as the industry is at an inflection point. Organizations that do not accept agent AI risk falling behind immediately. Managing strategic priorities requires a five-stage, intensive approach to agent AI evolution (see Figure 1).

Stage 1: AI Assistant for All Applications

By the end of 2025, Gartner predicts that almost every enterprise application will have assistants built into, transforming inefficient apps into intelligent systems that work on behalf of users.

AI Assistant is a precursor to Agent AI. Simplifies user tasks and interactions, but it depends on human input and does not work independently. The most common misconception is that these AI assistants are called agents. This is a misconception promoted by a widespread “agent wash.”

“CIOs and technology leaders need to focus on creating seamless employee experiences by integrating robust APIs with their AI assistants and enabling them to migrate from traditional, application-centric interfaces,” Verma said.

Stage 2: Task-specific agent application

By 2026, AI assistants will evolve into AI agents with task specialization. This is an important step towards a true agent function. Gartner predicts that 40% of enterprise applications will be integrated with task-specific agents by 2026, up from below 5% today.

“As AI agents begin to act independently and handle tasks ranging from everyday development to complex incident response without human involvement, leaders need to ensure strong security and governance,” Verma said.

Stage 3: Joint AI Agents in Applications

Collaboration between AI agents redefines enterprise applications as organizations migrate beyond single-purpose automation. By 2027, Gartner predicts that a third of agent AI implementations will combine agents with a variety of skills to manage complex tasks within applications and data environments.

Today's AI agents often focus on individual task-specific features, allowing you to limit your overall business impact. Collaborative agents provide a more adaptive and scalable solution by learning from real-time data and adjusting it to new conditions. At this stage, technology leaders should prioritize standardization and interoperability and adopt protocols that support seamless agent-to-agent communication.

Stage 4: AI Agent Ecosystem for the Whole Application

By 2028, the AI ​​Agent Ecosystem will allow networks of specialized agents to collaborate dynamically across multiple applications, allowing users to achieve their goals without interacting with each application individually.

This shift promotes the need for new business models, greater transparency, dynamic pricing and increased governance to ensure the operation of ethical agent AI.

Gartner estimates that by 2028, a third of the user experience will move from native applications to the agent front-end, requiring a new business model to avoid intermediation.

Stage 5: “New Normal” for a Democratized Enterprise App

Gartner predicts by 2029, at least 50% of knowledge workers will develop new skills to work with, govern and create AI agents whose demand is turned on for complex tasks.

“As Agent AI matures, standardized protocols and frameworks allow seamless interoperability, allowing agents to sense the environment, coordinate projects and support a wide range of business scenarios,” Verma said. “Early recruits set standards for new normal recruits, but there's a risk that others will be delayed when humans start to rely on AI agents as much as smartphones.”
