Japan announced Friday that G7 (G7) country officials will meet next week to consider problems posed by generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT.
G7 leaders, including the United States, the European Union and Japan, agreed last week to create an intergovernmental forum called the “Hiroshima AI Process” to discuss issues related to the burgeoning AI tools.

Japan’s communications minister Takeaki Matsumoto said G7 government officials will hold the first AI working-level meeting on May 30 to consider issues such as intellectual property protection, disinformation and how to manage technology. .
The conference comes as tech regulators around the world assess the impact of popular AI services like ChatGPT by Microsoft-backed OpenAI.
The EU is close to enacting the world’s first major law on AI, prompting other governments to consider what rules should apply to AI tools.
As this year’s G7 presidency, Japan will “lead G7 discussions on the adaptive use of generative AI technologies,” Matsumoto said, adding that the forum hopes to finalize proposals to world leaders by the end of the year.
At last week’s G7 summit in Hiroshima, leaders also called for the development and adoption of international technical standards to “trust” AI and keep it “aligned with shared democratic values.”
At a regular press conference, Matsumoto said the G7AI working group would seek input from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development.
