In one of the largest internal protests at a tech company in modern times, more than 1,000 Amazon employees wrote an open letter to CEO Andy Jassy and his team opposing the company’s rapid adoption of artificial intelligence.
In a shocking letter, employees accused Amazon of developing AI at breakneck speed, harming democracy, jobs, and the planet as a whole.
An open letter signed by 1,039 Amazon employees reads: “We at Amazon have grave concerns about this aggressive development at a time when authoritarianism is on the rise globally and at the most critical moment for reversing the climate crisis. We believe that an approach that justifies every cost and approaches AI development at warp speed will do staggering damage to our democracy, our jobs, and our planet.”
This comes a month after Amazon announced plans for mass layoffs, saying it would increase its reliance on AI.
The letter is signed by companies such as Microsoft, Google, Meta, Apple, Uber, and Salesforce, as well as employees such as engineers, product managers, and warehouse staff.

Employees have made a variety of demands against Amazon over the impact on their workplaces and the environment. They accuse the company of abandoning climate goals to build an AI-first company.
Amazon has pledged to have net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, but employees claimed annual emissions have increased by about 35% since 2019 and said the AI race is “widening this gap.”
Amazon plans to spend $150 billion to build new data centers for AI.
“Amazon is forcing us to use AI while investing in a future that makes us more disposable,” the employees further argued.
They cited Andy Jassy’s plans to use more AI tools and agents, saying the company is forcing them to shorten output timelines, mandating the use of AI in futile cases and not investing enough in career advancement.
The letter also calls on Amazon to ensure that its AI-powered products and services do not enable “violence, surveillance, or mass deportation.”
“All of this is daunting, but none of it is inevitable. A better future is still within reach, but it requires getting real about the costs of AI and the guardrails needed.”
They said Amazon needs to execute on a plan to 1) power all data centers with 100% additional local renewable energy 24/7, 2) eliminate custom AI solutions for oil and gas companies to drill more oil faster, and 3) publish a detailed, science-backed glidepath on how it will achieve its climate change commitments.
The letter further emphasizes the need for an ethical AI working group comprised of non-management personnel across the company.
“We want the benefits promised by AI to give everyone more freedom to play and rest, spend time with family and friends, be inspired by nature, create, and feel safe being themselves,” the company said.
