Young people are becoming more familiar with artificial intelligence. From ChatGPT to DALL-E to Gemini, users have access to a variety of tools to help them with their tasks. Millennials seem to be most interested in using AI for financial management, while Gen Z is more likely to use AI for their studies.
Even social networks are launching their own AI-based tools. With the mainstream success of ChatGPT, artificial intelligence is making huge strides online and gaining popularity among young people. But while younger generations may be familiar with these tools, they aren't necessarily expected to use them for the same reasons.
YPulse's latest report asked 1,500 young people between the ages of 13 and 39 what they would like to ask an AI-powered chatbot and how they would like it to help them. While the answers vary by age, they reflect the concerns and needs of young people in their personal and professional lives.
From academics to career advice
According to the survey, the main reason young Gen Zers (ages 13-17) want to use AI-powered chatbots is to help them with their studies, which was also the reason cited most by young adults (ages 18-24), who came in second in the category.
Younger Gen Zers said they would like to use AI to help them solve math problems, write essays, find information for homework, and others said AI could help them learn new skills or deepen their understanding of certain subjects.
This could be an alarming situation, according to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, which showed that 25% of American teachers believe AI tools do more harm than good in primary and secondary education.
Young people and millennials (ages 25-39) want to use AI in their work. Their interests are different from those of Gen Z. According to the survey, the main reason they want to use an AI-powered chatbot is to get financial advice, such as investment advice or tips on how to save money. The second most common reason is for advice on studies and job hunting.
In addition to seeking professional help, some young people turn to ChatGPT and other AI tools for romantic help. However, only 18-24 year olds rank “relationship advice” as their 8th priority. The 13-17 and 25-39 age groups prefer to seek advice on mental health, ranking it 7th and 10th respectively. This topic is not mentioned by 18-24 year olds. Talking about mental health was one of the top trends on TikTok in 2023.
According to a report by YPulse, around 68% of 13-39 year olds have already used an AI chatbot like ChatGPT or an AI-powered image generator like DALL-E. Of these, 61% have used chatbots like ChatGPT, Jasper, or YouChat. This trend is especially pronounced among 18-24 year olds, of whom 75% have already used an AI chatbot, and usage remains high among teenagers (52% of 13-17 year olds) and millennials (57% of 25-39 year olds).
The survey also found that AI usage among young people has skyrocketed over the past year. In fact, only 45% of 13-39 year olds said they had used an AI chatbot in the past year. – AFP Relaxnews
