Chores are difficult. After a long day at work, you may not want to clean the house or do the dishes. At least once you’ve probably wished there was a robot that could do all of these things for you. After all, if AI can write code, why can’t robots do housework? Sounds like someone can hear you. American startup Tau Robotics has launched a cleaning service that uses humanoid robots to clean your home and do household chores.
Tau Robotics CEO Alexander Koch announced the cleaning service on X with a video of a robot doing housework. In one clip, a robot can be seen getting out of a van, picking up cleaning supplies, and heading to work in about 21 seconds. The robot wears a black uniform and has two cameras placed like eyes on its white face, making it very adorable. The movement is also quite smooth.
Koch wrote that the human cleaning service costs $30 (approximately Rs. 3,000) per hour. Note that each robot will be jointly controlled by a human operator and AI, according to the startup. These robots can also operate equipment such as vacuum cleaners and pick up trash.
A humanoid robot that cleans the house and does housework
Tau Robotics has three types of humanoid robots available for this service. Chelsea uses non-toxic products to clean kitchens and bathrooms, including sinks, counters, mirrors, tiles, and floors.
Elon will then be responsible for weekly visits. According to the company’s website, after a few visits, Elon can learn where your things should be and put them back there instead of organizing them into piles. In one clip, Elon is seen washing dishes from his claw-like fingers.
Tony is the third type of robot and is meant for deep cleaning. It is designed to clean corners and window marks that cannot be reached with regular cleaning.
All three robots have the same design but different facial colors. Chelsea is white, Elon is purple, and Tony is green.
Tau Robotics claims its humanoid robots can adapt to each space and customer preference.
Can I use a humanoid to clean my house?
For now, Tau Robotics says bookings for cleaning services will remain by invitation only for early members. Selected households can join the waitlist by sharing their email address and neighborhood and receive an invitation code when an opening becomes available near them. This service is also limited to San Francisco for now.
The company says humans will operate these robots in collaboration with AI, but it’s unclear how the system will actually work or what privacy safeguards are in place.
For context, 1X Technologies’ Neo humanoid robot similarly operates with joint control. However, you can set up restricted areas on Neo to prevent human operators from accessing certain rooms. 1X Technologies also stated that Neo’s face is blurred in the footage he sees.
