Unlike many companies that cram AI into their browsers, Mozilla will soon offer a way to turn off all of these features. An update scheduled for February 24th will add a new “AI Controls” option to Firefox’s settings menu, allowing users to disable or enable individual AI features in the browser, including access to built-in AI chatbots, translations, AI tab group suggestions, and more.
In December, Enzor-DeMeo promised an AI “kill switch” in response to users unhappy with Firefox’s AI adoption. “Choice matters, and demonstrating our commitment to choice is how we build and maintain trust,” Enzor DeMeo wrote at the time. A toggle is currently in the works and includes an option to disable all current and future AI features. You can also control whether Firefox uses AI to generate alternative text for images in PDFs and key points in link previews.
“AI is changing the web, and people want something very different from AI,” Firefox vice president of products Ajit Varma said in the announcement. “We heard a lot of people who wanted nothing to do with AI, and we also heard people who wanted AI tools that really helped them. Listening to the community, along with our continued commitment to providing choice, led us to build AI Control.”
