Firefox 126 upscales YouTube videos with NVIDIA RTX AI

AI Video & Visuals

Firefox now offers the RTX video enhancements that Chrome and Edge users have been enjoying for the past year. RTX video enhancements are available in the Firefox 126 update and require an NVIDIA RTX GPU and a reasonably high-quality monitor or TV.

The RTX Video Suite includes several AI-powered video enhancement technologies. In this case, the focus is on video super resolution and RTX video HDR. Video Super Resolution converts 1080p videos to 4K, and RTX Video HDR upgrades SDR videos to colorful, high-contrast HDR.

Obviously, these enhancements will only benefit users who own a 4K or HDR capable computer monitor. Still, as NVIDIA points out, about 90% of online video is low-resolution SDR. With RTX video enhancements available, you'll notice a significant improvement in the quality when watching videos on YouTube and other platforms.

Let me reiterate that RTX video HDR only works in the browser. It is not available across Windows operating systems. NVIDIA offers another suite of video enhancement technologies for gaming. However, VLC currently supports NVIDIA video super resolution, so it's possible it will get RTX video HDR at some point.

In addition to RTX video, the Firefox 126 release brings zstd content encoding (which makes Facebook load faster), AV1 hardware decode acceleration for the latest Macs, and removes tracking data from URLs in the clipboard. Added “Copy without site tracking” option. There are also some security and bug fixes, and Firefox has temporarily disabled pasting URL suggestions as it investigates a performance bug. A complete list of changes in Firefox 126 can be found on the Mozilla website.

NVIDIA's Video Super Resolution feature requires a 30 or 40 series RTX GPU, but RTX Video HDR works with all models of RTX graphics cards. To enable these features, install the latest Firefox update (version 126), set up the latest GeForce RTX Game Ready drivers, and enable HDR in Windows Display Settings.
