FDA “furtherly improves efficiency” using AI in drug approval

The Food and Drug Administration plans to use artificial intelligence to “raterly improve efficiency.” This will determine whether to approve new drugs and devices, one of the top priorities set out in an article published on JAMA on Tuesday.

Another initiative includes reviews on chemicals and other “contents” that appear in US foods, rather than foods from other developed countries. Officials want to speed up the final stage of making drug or medical device approval decisions in weeks, citing the success of operational speeds during the Covid pandemic when workers competed to curb the spiral death count.

“The FDA will focus on providing rapid treatment and meaningful treatment for patients, especially those with neglected rare diseases, healthy foods for children, and patients with a common sense approach to rebuilding public trust,” says Dr. Vainai Prasad, a committee member of the agency, Dr. Vinai Prasad, who led the division overseeing vaccin and Gene Therapy.

The agency has played a central role in pursuing the agenda of US Secretary of Health Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and has already begun pushing food manufacturers to eliminate artificial food dyes. The new roadmap also highlights the Trump administration's efforts to smooth the path to a major industry with a variety of initiatives aimed at acquiring products in pharmacies and storing shelves quickly.

Some aspects of the proposal outlined in Jama have been met with the idea that artificial intelligence in particular can range from painstaking work to the shear challenges of months or years, considering applications that companies submit when seeking approval for drugs or high-risk medical devices.

“I don't want to refuse a review of speeding at the FDA,” said Stephen Holland, a lawyer who previously advised the House Committee on Energy and Commerce in Healthcare. “I think there's a great potential here, but I haven't seen the beef yet.”
