Egypt’s Dar Al Ifta has declared that it is religiously unacceptable to use artificial intelligence (AI) applications to interpret, explain, or derive meaning from the Holy Quran.
According to Arab media, the religious decree (fatwa) was issued in response to questions from the public regarding the use of AI tools to understand the teachings of the Quran.
Dar Al Ifta warned that relying on AI-based applications could spread misinformation and misinterpretations.
He said such techniques lack the true religious training, scholarly authority, and deep jurisprudential insight necessary for Qur’anic interpretation.
The fatwa emphasized that in order to preserve the true spirit and accurate meaning of Islamic teachings, a proper understanding of the Holy Quran must come from reliable, experienced and recognized religious sources.
Dar al-Ifta further clarified that only well-established Qur’anic commentaries, eminent scholars, and reliable religious organizations should be consulted for interpretation.
He said that AI programs cannot be considered reliable sources of Quranic explanations.
According to reports, the AI platforms referenced include ChatGPT. Dar al-Ifta argued that such tools cannot provide legitimate Sharia guidance on issues related to the interpretation of the Qur’an.
The ruling comes as debate over the benefits and risks of artificial intelligence continues to rage in educational, religious, and research communities around the world.
