MADURAI: With elections just around the corner, candidates will not only have to grapple with political criticism but also fake posts and AI-generated videos, especially those targeting specific user groups.
A few days ago, a social media post cited a video on a news channel in which former Madurai Mayor and AIADMK candidate Thiruparankundrum VV Rajan Chellappa allegedly promised to demolish religious places on Thiruparankundrum Hill. After the post went viral, the candidate claimed it was completely fake.
When you talk to TNIEChellappa said, “This post is aimed at creating division. Some members of the Muslim community have also contacted me and clarified that the news is fabricated. Such posts not only distort the stand of our party but also tarnish my reputation.”
Besides the post by Chellappa, a post on DMK candidate Kritika Thangapandian from Thiruparankundram was also widely circulated, promising to enact a special law on Thiruparankundram. In response, Krishka said, “Our IT department has already filed a cybercrime complaint with the police.”
Apart from these sensitive topics, many posts solicit support for a particular political party. A social media post, also attributed to a television channel, said masjid officials in Vellore had appealed to the Muslim community to support the DMK.
Another post claims that Nagapattinam MLA Arol Shanavas has said that he was ostracized by his party, VCK, because he is from a minority religion.
