Aamir Khan, Ranveer Singh, Rashmika Mandanna and Aamir Khan are among those who have borne the brunt of the overuse of AI, which is not only a security threat but also leaves fans confused as to whether it is legit, real or fake.
What is Deepfake Technology?
Deepfake is a technology that uses AI to replace people in existing images or videos with the likeness of another person.
Deepfakes can often be spotted by unnatural facial expressions and movements, such as blinking too much or too little, stiff or jerky movements, etc. Eyes are a good indicator of whether a video is real or fake.
Alia Bhatt's GRWM video goes viral
The latest celebrity to fall prey to deepfakes is Alia Bhatt. On Friday, a video of her went viral on social media.
The video sees Alia making an appearance on the popular “Get Ready With Me” (GRWM) trend, which was shared on Instagram by user “Sameeksha Avtr.”
Claims: Reel or real?
“All videos are created with AI and for entertainment purposes only,” an Instagram user wrote in their profile.
As soon as the video went viral, some netizens were confused by Alia being on the GRWM trend.
Fact Check
A fact-check by the International Business Times India revealed that this is not Alia Bhatt, but an Instagram page that uses AI technology to edit photos and videos of celebrities for entertainment purposes.
Alia Bhatt's fans were also concerned about the misuse of technology, especially AI, and exclaimed that it's not Alia Bhatt.
“AI is becoming more dangerous every day,” one fan wrote.
Meanwhile, another wrote: “I feel sorry for those who think it's real.”
“AI is starting to get scary,” a third user commented.
A fourth said: “I thought it was Arya but then I looked closer and it wasn't Arya.”
“The AI one. For a second I thought it was a doppelganger,” a fifth user commented.
Alia Bhatt has been a victim of deepfake videos in the past
This is not the first time a deepfake video of Alia has gone viral on social media – in May this year, a video of Alia's face was leaked online in which her face was morphed into that of actress Wamiqa Gabi.
Rashmika Mandanna deepfake video
Last year, Delhi Police reportedly tracked down four suspects who uploaded a deepfake video of Rashmika Mandanna online.
In the video, a woman identifying herself as Zara Patel is seen entering an elevator wearing a black fitness one-piece. Her face resembles Mandana. As soon as the video was posted, authorities tracked down all the IP addresses from which the video was posted and launched an investigation. The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) notified the city police and on November 11, the Intelligence and Joint Strategic Operations Wing (IFSO) of Delhi Police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified individuals in connection with the crime.
