The situation changed on Tuesday when Cypriots published a near-final document supporting a ban on AI systems that can produce images, videos or audio of “the intimate parts of an identifiable natural person, or of an identifiable natural person engaged in sexually explicit conduct.”
Including the ban would be a win for countries such as Spain, which have strongly promoted bans. EU ambassadors are expected to give the green light to the document on Friday.
European parliamentarians agreed on Wednesday to include language that would ban “AI systems that alter, manipulate, or artificially generate realistic images or videos to depict sexually explicit acts or intimate parts of an identifiable natural person without their consent.”
However, the agreement reached at Wednesday’s political conference states that the ban “does not apply to companies that have put in place effective security measures.” [in place] This is to prevent the generation of such depictions and avoid abuse. ”
The document is not yet final and is expected to be voted on by a key parliamentary committee on March 18th.
Parliament and council will then meet to agree on a final version before the ban becomes law.
As part of a separate report on AI and copyright, Congress on Tuesday also asked the commission to “investigate measures to protect individuals from the spread of manipulated, AI-generated digital image, audio, or video content.”
“Even a 10-second joke can cause lasting damage to the victim,” Dutch Green Party lawmaker Kim van Spalentak said on Monday. “It’s time to ban all these apps.”
