The City of Brussels will reportedly launch a new antitrust investigation into Metaplatform over its integration of artificial intelligence features into WhatsApp.

According to financial timesrecent moves signal increased scrutiny of Big Tech’s use of generative AI on large-scale platforms.

The commission was scheduled to launch an investigation into how the California-based company integrated its Meta AI system into its messaging service earlier this year.

Meta AI was first integrated into the WhatsApp interface across European markets in March 2025.

The company later clarified that it had not received any details of the investigation and that it was in response to an earlier WhatsApp statement regarding the Italian investigation.

Italy’s antitrust watchdog launched an investigation in July into allegations that Meta took advantage of its market position by integrating AI tools into WhatsApp.

It is observed that the inspection was expanded in November to scrutinize whether Meta further abused its position by banning competing AI chatbots from its messaging platform.

The report said the committee would announce its investigation within the next few days, but the timing would vary.

According to financial timesthe investigation will be conducted under traditional antitrust law rather than EU digital markets law, the regulation used to analyze Amazon and Microsoft’s cloud services.

Nevertheless, this case is an important indicator of increased EU regulatory focus on how big tech companies integrate generative AI into their major platforms.
