RICHLAND, Wash. – Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a key partner in the Genesis Mission, the Department of Energy’s integrated ecosystem that accelerates discovery and strengthens U.S. leadership in AI-powered science. PNNL leverages deep expertise in AI, new computing paradigms, and fundamental science design and application to create AI solutions that support autonomous discovery science in chemistry, materials, and biology, expedite environmental permitting, and ensure a reliable and secure energy grid. These efforts and more make PNNL a transformative AI engine that advances the nation’s science, energy, and national security missions.

WASHINGTON – President Trump today issued an executive order launching the Genesis Mission, a historic national effort led by the Department of Energy. The Genesis Mission will transform American science and innovation through the power of artificial intelligence (AI), strengthening the nation’s technological leadership and global competitiveness.
This ambitious mission leverages today’s AI and advanced computing revolution to double the productivity and impact of American science and engineering within 10 years. It would provide a decisive breakthrough to ensure America’s energy dominance, accelerate scientific discovery, and strengthen national security.
“Throughout our history, from the Manhattan Project to the Apollo program, our nation’s brightest minds and industry have answered the call in times of national need,” said U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright. “Today, the United States is calling on them again. Under President Trump’s leadership, the Genesis mission will unleash the full force of our national laboratories, supercomputers, and data resources to ensure America is the world leader in artificial intelligence and usher in a new golden age of American discovery.”
The announcement builds on President Trump’s executive order to remove barriers to U.S. leadership in artificial intelligence and advances his U.S. AI Action Plan, a directive released earlier this year to remove barriers to innovation, reduce dependence on foreign adversaries, and unleash the full power of the U.S. scientific enterprise.
Secretary Wright appointed Under Secretary of Science Dario Gil to lead this effort. The Genesis mission brings together the Department of Energy’s 17 national laboratories, industry, and academia to create an integrated discovery platform.
The platform connects the world’s best supercomputers, AI systems, and next-generation quantum systems with the nation’s most advanced scientific instruments. When completed, this platform will be the world’s most complex and powerful scientific instrument ever built. It will leverage the expertise of approximately 40,000 DOE scientists, engineers, and technical staff alongside private sector innovators to ensure the United States leads and builds the technologies that define the future.
The Genesis Mission will focus on addressing three key challenges of national importance.
America’s Energy Advantage: The Genesis Mission uses AI to accelerate advanced nuclear power, fusion, and grid modernization to provide Americans with affordable, reliable, and safe energy.
Advances in discovery science: Through DOE investments and collaboration with industry, America is building a quantum ecosystem that will drive discovery and industry for decades to come.
Ensuring National Security: DOE will develop advanced AI technologies for national security missions, deploy systems to ensure the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, and accelerate the development of defense materiel.
