Elon Musk To tell grox Real-time news feature Almost as expected So far you'll be getting information purely from “summaries of what people said about X”. big tech newsletter Friday. Musk said each Grok summary aims to combine breaking news and social commentary by analyzing “tens of thousands” of tweets, but does not consider any news articles.
“As more information becomes available, the news summary will be updated to include that information,” Musk told Big Tech. “The goal is simple: to provide the most accurate and timely information possible, citing the most important sources.”
Grok's approach to AI-generated news is unique. Rapid breaking news and social commentary have historically helped Twitter stand out from other social media sites. Elon Musk wants to distill these parts of the site into short news summaries on Grok. However, this approach also exposes his Grok to his X's worst failures.
The platform is full of sarcasm, hate speech, and misinformation, making it difficult for Elon Musk's robots to do “open source journalism” (if we can call it that) . So far, Grok's AI news summaries have struggled to decipher what's true, often framing jokes as legitimate news articles. One AI news summary said:Klay Thompson accused of bizarre brick vandalism” and misinterpreted a rough NBA All-Star game as a legal crime.
Igor Babuschkin, a technical staff member at Grok developer xAI, told Big Technology that his team is working on “getting Grok to understand news just from what's posted on X.” News outlets are often discussed on X, so Babushkin said Grok sometimes references news articles mentioned in posts. xAI is “working to improve citations to ensure we know where the information in our articles came from,” he says. But it seems impossible to accurately quote a news article you haven't read.
Including social commentary in your Grok overview can be a good way to keep your users up to date. A common problem for new X users is that they don't know what's going on and feel like they've been left in the middle of the story. AI news summaries have the potential to allow casual users to join the conversation. Of course, this assumes that Grok understands the story's context, which I've repeatedly struggled with.
