Catholic Churches see an increase in levels of vandalism at places of worship
German Catholic Churches are increasingly concerned about the worsening vandalism at places of worship.
According to Matthias Kopp, a spokesman for the German Bishops' Conference, methods of vandalism have become more “cruel” in recent years.
“We provided broken boxes and broken candles and broken candles have always been a nuisance, but since around 2015 we have been dealing with an intensified dimension,” he said.
The number of incidents has risen slightly, but Cop believes the destructor's actions show more open hostility towards Christianity.
“The font of sacred water and the excretion of the confessor, the beheaded statues of Christ and the saints” were just some of the examples provided by Kopp.
He lamented that police officers recorded the crime as “damage to property” and said the incident would affect parishioners at a deeper level.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the German Evangelical Church (EKD) said the current trends erode trust in the idea that churches open to everyone are safe spaces.
Closing churches outside of service is not a step that EKD would like to be taken. “Open churches aren't just spaces for worship,” the spokesman said.
“They are places they go to places of crisis, cultural memory, and social interaction.”
