MONTERY, CA – US Marines gathered in the US Marine Corps (NPS) began their first artificial intelligence (AI) fellowship held jointly by the US Marine Corps and NPs on August 11-14.

The pilot fellowship, interim entitled USMC-NPS AI Fellowship, is an initiative of the 2024 USMC AI Strategy aimed at accelerating advanced AI research and building AI talent within the Marine Corps. NPS provides fellows with the opportunity to develop AI prototypes inspired by artificial intelligence, mentorship from undergraduate and industry experts, practical research experience, and the real challenges faced by fellow commanders.

“The fellowship leverages the eager Marines who are knowledgeable about modern and related issues in the fleet, faculty experts, cutting-edge facilities at the Naval Graduate School, and the potential for contradictions of artificial intelligence and machine learning.”

For the next five months, AI Fellows will split their time between NPS and Home Commands before closing their pilot program in January 2026. This first pilot will focus on developing AI talent within the Marines, but hopes the fellowship will include service members from other branches in future iterations.

“Our goal is to optimize AI applications across the unit,” Paul said. “To do that, we need to increase the population of military AI promotion and literacy, which is what this fellowship aims for.”

Information about future fellowship opportunities will be released via management messages. For inquiries regarding pilot fellowships, please contact Dr. Christopher Paul, Dr. Christopher.
