Is this video of a dog at a pet adoption event choosing which human it wants to go home with real? No, it’s not. The video was created by an artificial intelligence tool. A closer look at these videos reveals glitches typical of AI-generated videos, such as distorted hands and strange objects. AI content detection tools and an AI disclosure label on the original TikTok version confirmed the video was fake.
Several versions of the fake video were first shared on TikTok’s @babies.dogs.cats account. Among them is this video (archived here) posted on December 3, 2025 under the caption:

Why dogs choose humans: Understanding the bond
Dogs have an innate ability to form bonds with humans, distinguishing them as one of our closest companions. Because of this deep connection, dogs often choose certain humans as their favorites based on factors such as personality, behavior, and mutual affection. Understanding why dogs choose certain people could unravel mysteries in the human-animal relationship.

The AI video creation tool may add objects in unnatural places, such as a red leash that appears to be hanging from the shepherd’s belly.

Fact checkers (and you) can also test questionable videos using free online tools, such as the Hive Moderation AI content detection tool. When I uploaded a 24-second clip of this video, it concluded 99.9% of the time that it “contains AI-generated content.”

Another tool we use is Google’s SynthID tool. This lets you know if Google’s AI video creation tools were used to create the video.
You should also check the account profile description to ensure that the content is not genuine. The @babies.dogs.cats TikTok account doesn’t reveal this, but it includes a link to its YouTube channel (archived here) and says:
All videos on this channel are fictional, digitally created storytelling designed to inspire kindness, imagination, and love for animals.
The @babies.dogs.cats account includes a Part 2 video (archived here) starting with the next frame.

In this video, we find another typical AI video glitch: a third move on people.

Many people may ignore the red flags that these “dog chooses human” videos aren’t real. Because of the warm feelings these videos generate. But recognizing that videos that appear to be real may not be what they seem, and knowing how to spot fakes can help you avoid being fooled by more sinister misinformation users.
