The warning sent this month from NHS England came a few weeks after I wrote a letter to my doctor about the benefits of using AI in my notes – using ambient voice technology or software called “AVT” to give you more time to concentrate on your patients.

However, there is growing controversy over software that uses AI to record, transcription, and summarise patient conversations.
In April, NHS England wrote to doctors to sell AVT profits and set minimum national standards.
However, in a letter seen by Sky News, the NHS boss wrote to a doctor to warn that unapproved software that violates minimum standards could harm patients.
A June 9 letter from the NHS England national chief clinical information officer stated:
“Several AVT suppliers are approaching NHS organizations… Many of these vendors are not following basic NHS governance standards.
“Progressing non-compliant solutions risks clinical safety, data protection breaches, financial exposure and fragmentation of the broader NHS digital strategy.”

NHS England sets minimum standards, but the software providers they use don't communicate to which software providers and healthcare providers.
Sky News has revealed increased pressure on NHS England and similar groups to be more aggressive.
“We are accused of the British Medical Association's GP Committee,” said Dr. David Wrigley, vice-chairman of the British Medical Association's GP Committee. “Undoubtedly, as GP me and my 35,000 colleagues, we are responsible here, but in such a rapidly developing market when we don't have the technical knowledge to investigate this.
“We need assistance and support from people who can make sure our products are safe, make sure they are safe, make sure they are suitable for use in the consulting room, and NHS England need to do that, help and support us.”
Dr. Wrigley continues:
“But otherwise it can be free to everyone, so it has to be done in a safe and secure way. And data can be lost, it can be leaked, and that's exactly unacceptable.
“So we're not dinosaurs, we're very ali, but we have to be in a safe and secure way.”
The head of the NHS Union says the letter is “a truly important moment.”
With dozens of unknown but ambitious AI companies lobbying hospitals and surgeries, setting up listening products is worrying for some medical professionals.
While this technological weapons race has enormous benefits, the question being asked is whether hundreds of different NHS organizations can really hope for sifting sharks.
Matthew Taylor, CEO of the NHS Coalition, said the letter was “a truly important moment.”
He said it's the right thing for the NHS to experiment, but he said it needs to be more clear about what technology is doing and it doesn't work safely.
“My own view is that governments should support in terms of how they should trust and advise which AI systems to manage, as well as other forms of technology we use in medicine,” Taylor said.
“It's necessary [government] A little more to guide the NHS in the best way to use this. ”
Taylor replied that, in a short-term push that actually sounds very dangerous, “What we saw with ambient voice technology is that such a “thousand-flowering” approach is limited.”

The AI Godfather warns of its dangers
Earlier this year, the Health Secretary seemed to suggest that unapproved technology was being used, but praised the doctors for being enthusiastic about change.
Streeting said: “I've heard anecdotes about a true pub going down a pub, some clinicians are ahead of the game, even if they already use Amvient AI and their practice and trust haven't caught up yet.
“Now there's a lot of problems there – they don't encourage it – but it's against this, saying, “Oh, people don't want to change, the staff are very happy and they're really resistant to change.” That's the opposite.

Doctors using AI that comply with national standards say there are already great benefits.
Anil Meta, a doctor in the Ilford district of Health Secretary, told Sky News that he supported MP's drive in search of more AI technology in healthcare.
“I spend 30% of the week on paperwork,” he said. “So, I think patients are very relieved when they explain everything about what we do and I am not facing anyone who doesn’t want to do this.
He added:
“It remains a secret. So whether it's a vulnerable adult, a vulnerable child, a teenager, a young child with a parent, I think the concept of confidentiality remains.”
An NHS spokesperson said: “Ambient voice technology has the potential to transform care and improve efficiency, and in April the NHS issued guidance to support use in a safe and secure way.
“We work with NHS organizations and suppliers to ensure that all surrounding voice technology products used throughout health services continue to comply with NHS standards for clinical safety and data security.”
