SINGAPORE – National Trades Union Congress (NTUC) Deputy Secretary-General Desmond Tan said businesses should use artificial intelligence to solve operational problems and improve worker productivity, while reiterating the labor movement’s push for AI implementation without increasing unemployment.
talk July 22nd Speaking at the launch of Singapore-based digital commerce company Synergy’s new AI platform, Mr Tan said businesses need to identify their business pain points before deciding whether AI is the right solution.
Proper execution must start with identifying the actual business problem, he said, adding that for some small and medium-sized enterprises, “one of the challenges is they don’t know where to start. And they start implementing AI because it’s the latest thing.”
Mr Tan said AI should be implemented in parallel with investment in workers through job redesign and skill upgradation. He also serves as Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office.

Mr Tan said businesses, workers and governments need to work together to successfully implement AI.
Synagie recently became a unionized company and entered into a collective agreement with the Singapore Industrial and Service Employees Union, enabling it to work with NTUC on workforce development and business transformation initiatives.
Mr Tan added that eligible companies can avail of the NTUC Corporate Training Committee subsidy. The grant provides up to 70 per cent funding for eligible business transformation projects, including job redesign, skills development and productivity improvements.
He said NTUC’s approach remains clear: “It’s not AI that replaces workers. It’s AI that works for workers.”
