There is no doubt that there is a high possibility that AI will take over the work of a particular person in the future. AI was previously considered a helper, but recent layoffs (particularly the high-tech industry) have put us all in a difficult situation. Apart from other areas such as writing and graphics, AI is also used in coding. Coinbase CEO has recently shared the same example. On X (aka Twitter), Brain Armstrong revealed that his company is currently using 40% of AI-generated coding.
Founded in June 2012, Coinbase is a digital currency wallet and trading platform that allows consumers and merchants to purchase, sell and manage cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin. Here, the CEO declared, “40% of the daily code written in Coinbase is generated by AI.” “I want to go above 50% by October,” he added.
According to a graph shared by Armstrong, Coinbase only used around 18% of the code generated by AI every day in April 2025. Since then, this practice has been increasingly working and hasn't looked back. This graph also means that it is not a difficult task for the codebase to aim to increase the code generated by AI to about 50%. And whether it's coding, it's a solid example of how companies rely on AI-generated content.
However, Armstrong has a slightly different view on the situation. Coinbase CEO stepped into the ongoing debate on AI vs. human at Jobs, thinking that “not every area of business can use AI-generated code.” He wants to use AI as much as possible, but also pointed out that AI should be used responsibly.
This take lies between two extreme opinions. Like some other tech leaders, Armstrong shows that not all AI jobs will be handed over to AI. For now, there is still hope for some positions that only humans can tackle.
Microsoft's experience and chief product officer Aparna Chennapragada has previously opposed the idea that coding is outdated. She insisted it was more valuable than ever. “A lot of people think, 'Oh, don't worry about computer science or coding.' And I fundamentally disagree,” she said.
She predicted role changes, acknowledging that the way we code could soon undergo major changes. [and presumably fewer software engineers in the conventional sense]She explained. However, it does not reduce the importance of understanding computer science. “It's a way of thinking, it's a mental model. So I'm a strong opposition to the whole 'coding is dead'. ”
Coming to AI-generated coding, Coinbase is not the only company using AI-generated coding. Tech giants like Microsoft and Google are also running in the same race. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella revealed days before the massive layoffs of its 9,000 employees that AI has already generated 30% of the company's code. On Google, CEO Sundar Pichai said that AI produces more than a quarter of its code, while the company's chief economist Fabien Curto Millet openly praises AI for driving significant productivity gains.
