Convey closes $38M in funding to help companies automate repetitive tasks with AI teammates

Agentic artificial intelligence startup Convey Inc. today announced that it has raised $38 million in early-stage funding to scale up its platform. The platform can be used by employees without technical skills to design, build, and run digital teammates that can autonomously perform business tasks.

The Series A round was led by Andreessen Horowitz with participation from Khosla Ventures and Pear VC. Convey said the funding will be used to ramp up product development efforts and expand the reach of its enterprise-grade platform.

Organizations are currently grappling with the harsh realities of implementing agent AI. According to Gartner Inc., global investment in AI technology is expected to exceed $2.5 trillion this year, but the majority of organizations still struggle to realize tangible benefits from these projects, especially when it comes to automating back-office tasks. Convey says that even at the most innovative companies, the most skilled employees can still spend several hours a day performing manual tasks such as retrieving data from spreadsheets, capturing orders, and producing routine reports.

Existing AI assistants may be able to make some employees a little more productive, but they won’t significantly change the nature of work for companies. Rather, they act as “co-pilots,” increasing productivity incrementally rather than delivering dramatic gains. Although they can assist humans, the majority of day-to-day business processes are still the responsibility of employees. As a result, most office workers are still stuck doing manual, repetitive tasks that they weren’t actually hired to do.

Convey’s goal is to completely eliminate this burden by allowing non-technical office workers to design, deploy, and manage their own AI workforce. Its platform allows anyone to create digital teammates without writing a single line of code.

Once launched, Convey’s autonomous agents can learn how to perform specific tasks, gather the necessary context, and take full ownership of the responsibilities handed to them. Convey critically noted that it is possible to onboard a new AI teammate in about three hours. Once deployed, you can automate tasks ranging from processing invoices and reconciling financial data to managing campaign reporting and ingesting advertising assets at scale.

In an interview with Business Insider, Rohan Chopra, the company’s co-founder and CEO, said the company wants to emphasize the idea of ​​AI teammates rather than agents, in that they are held accountable for results rather than just being given specific tasks. Chopra previously worked as an engineer at DoorDash Inc. and was inspired about 10 years ago by the struggles of a colleague named Steve. He was a “very smart guy who was wasting his time manually tracking all the drivers on their iPhones to assign them deliveries,” he explained.

“Orders will come in from a variety of restaurants,” Chopra said. “Steve looked at his phone and texted the dash guy and was like, ‘Hey, can you pick up this order of hummus?'”

Chopra built the necessary systems to automate that workflow, freeing Steve to work on more important tasks. So when AI exploded into the public consciousness, he decided it was time to give all companies access to the same kinds of capabilities.

Convey’s AI teammates operate within strict security and governance boundaries. Each system is provisioned in conjunction with the company’s information technology department and connected to critical corporate systems, including legacy platforms without modern application programming interfaces, and the IT team configures its identity, permissions, and governance guardrails, Chopra explained.

So far, Convey’s platform has been running well, delivering a measurable return on investment for early adopters. For example, business-to-business retail marketplace Faire Inc. leveraged Convey teammates to automate invoice processing tasks that previously took hundreds of manual hours. Meanwhile, an anonymous streaming service was able to save over 23,000 hours per year related to reporting and advertising workflows.

Joe Schmidt, a partner at Andreessen Horowitz, said one of the biggest problems with AI today is that many companies struggle with “impact adoption.” AI usage continues to increase, but the ROI will never materialize, he said. “Convey teammates own the results of the operational work that has the most impact on the organization, making returns measurable from the start,” he explained.

Moving forward, Convey’s current mission is to make all back-office operations teams AI-native. “We parachute in, help teams stand up their AI talent, and hand control back to them to own,” Chopra explained. “This Series A will help us build that at scale.”
