Viral artificial intelligence tools such as ChatGPT have made headlines for their ability to write essays and solve math equations in seconds, raising national and international concerns about plagiarism and fraud among educational institutions.
In a recent statement, Singapore’s Ministry of Education (MOE) believes that AI tools present both opportunities and challenges in any technology.
To prevent generative AI in learning, schools in Singapore also measure student proficiency and analyze potentially AI-generated features through daily interactions with students and multiple assessment modes. We employ a variety of practices, such as detecting non-reactive responses.
But I believe those of us who work in schools and exam fields should be excited about the rise of ChatGPT and AI software and should embrace this as a special occasion.
Contrary to some ideologies, this is not the end of the exam, or even a major threat to the classroom, but I am very much aware of the impact artificial intelligence software that can create sophisticated responses can have on how we think about education. is focused on learning and evaluation.
We should not regard this amazing new technology as a threat.
Like spell checkers, translation software, and calculators, we have to accept it becoming a part of our daily lives. Therefore, education must be adapted and transformed so that students can use these new AI tools ethically and effectively.
Why IB won’t ban AI tools like CHATGPT
In fact, many of the problems posed by ChatGPT and other similar AI software are beyond the control of the International Baccalaureate (IB), even though these technologies differ significantly in speed and accessibility. It’s an extension or variation of a familiar current problem. and scale.

Over the years, teachers and IBs have dealt with essays purchased from the internet (so-called ‘essay mills’) and completed by external instructors or families.

Future focus of the IB
The IB aims to promote a holistic education and better prepare students for the workplace, with a focus on rewarding students for their ideas, explanations and creativity.

With AI like ChatGPT, students have the opportunity to extend the suggestions provided by the software to communicate their ideas more fluently.
The IB is constantly looking for ways to develop curricula and assessments that incorporate new technologies to prepare students for the future, including offering a variety of extracurricular activities that prepare students outside the classroom.
For example, our career-related programs offer students the opportunity to explore their career interests and develop the skills they need to succeed in the business world.
Furthermore, by connecting students with the community, IB fosters caring attitudes and gives them a sense of personal and social responsibility.
Through such programs, students gain a deeper understanding of the world of business and the skills and knowledge they need to become successful entrepreneurs.
As educators, we need to understand that education and schooling are not separate, they go beyond school.
