Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong is very serious about AI and is not afraid to lose employees.
Using AI coding assistants for employees was a priority for the 42-year-old CEO when Coinbase, the largest US cryptocurrency exchange, has acquired an enterprise license from both Github Copilot and Cursor.

As he said, Armstrong heard it would take a quarter to bring the company's computer engineers into their AI coding tools. Instead, he “got fraudulently” in a Slack post asking all engineers to be onboarded by the end of the week.
“I was 'AI was important. We need you to learn it all and at least have it onboard. You don't need to use it every day until you train yet, but at least you don't need to use it onboard by the end of the week.
At Saturday's meeting, Armstrong showed how important AI mandates are.
“Some of them have come back from some trips and something,” Armstrong said. “Some of them weren't, and they were fired.”

Armstrong is one of many high-tech CEOs who have promoted AI adoption as a labor need. CEOs of Google, Microsoft and Shopify are required or strongly encouraged by using AI, especially for engineering teams. Others, like Amazon CEO Andy Jassy, have warned that AI could mean fewer future employees in companies.
AI coding assistants like Github Copilot and Cursor are becoming the go-to tools for computer programmers as they can bridge gaps and save time. The widespread adoption of the tool is evident in a GitHub survey of 500 US programmers from large companies who found 92% already use AI tools, while 70% say the tool gives the job an edge.
Some people criticized Armstrong for being heavy, but said that the ordeal set a clear bar of the importance of AI at Coinbase.
Apart from the mission of AI Coding Assistant, Coinbase is held every month for “AI SpeedRuns.” Employees implementing this technology at WELL will hold seminars for other companies. Armstrong claims that a third of the company's code is written by AI, achieving its 50% target by the end of the quarter. He encourages other teams outside of engineering to use technology as well.
“By the way, as a CEO, I use it a lot,” he said.
