Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong revealed that around 40% of the company's daily codes were generated by artificial intelligence, with the aim of increasing this figure to over 50% by October 2025. Armstrong highlighted the responsible integration of AI in code development. In a post on X, Armstrong said: “Obviously, it needs to be reviewed and understood, and not every area of your business can use AI-generated code, but you should use it as responsibly as possible.” [1].
According to a chart shared by Armstrong, Coinbase's AI-generated code percentage has more than doubled since April [1]. This change reflects the broader trends in the high-tech industry, where companies are increasingly adopting AI-powered coding tools. According to a report from OpsLevel, by June 2025, 94% of high-tech companies were using AI coding assistants, cited as a major benefit as their employees were using AI coding assistants, increasing productivity and faster markets to market. [2]. Armstrong's vision is consistent with the industry-wide movement, as Coinbase aims to transform its workforce into “AI-Natives” rather than replacing its 4,200 employees with AI. [1].
To achieve this goal, Coinbase requires the entire engineering team to use AI coding tools such as Copilot, Claude Code, and Cursor. Armstrong has permitted the task to be carried out in strict measures, including fire engineers who resisted the use of these tools and failed to justify their decision. “By the way, some people really didn't like that strong approach, but I think it set the clarity that we should lean on this and learn about it,” he said in a recent interview with John Collison's “Cheeky Pints” podcast. [5].
The CEO also notes that AI is used beyond engineering, with design, product management and finance teams leveraging AI for tasks such as forecast revenue and decision-making. Coinbase has even started to incorporate AI into its internal decision-making process. AI input is treated as one of the participants in meetings and discussions. Armstrong emphasizes that it is experimenting with the extent to which AI functions as decision makers, suggesting potential changes in the way companies operate. [5].
Despite the aggressive recruitment of AI, Coinbase continues to expand its engineering workforce, with over 150 engineering positions currently open. Almost half of the company's 350 current job openings aim for technical roles, with many demanding AI-related skills [1]. The recruitment strategy reflects the broader dynamics of the cryptocurrency industry, where AI is attracting both talent and capital. Industry recruiters have pointed out that there has been a significant tightening of crypto adoption since 2022, mainly due to the growing influence of AI. [4].
The integration of AI into coding has sparked debate about the future of the high-tech sector. While some have raised concerns about widespread unemployment due to AI, Armstrong and others argue that the technology is more likely to increase productivity than completely replacing human workers. “I want to make sure it's being used, not just the engineering team. Which team should really be,” Armstrong said, highlighting the possibility that AI can support roles across the organization. [5]. Views on the long-term impact of AI on employment and the economy differ, and debate continues.
