COBB COUNTY, Georgia — Criminals are using artificial intelligence to trick people, the Cobb County Sheriff’s Fraud and Counterfeit Division said.
The ministry is busy learning all it can about these plans and raising awareness among communities about how they can protect themselves.
“It’s improving day by day and will continue to improve. That’s exactly what the future looks like,” said Raj Sherat, a fraud investigator with the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office.
If artificial intelligence falls into the wrong hands, it can have detrimental effects.
“It can be used for many positive benefits, but we would like to focus on the negative benefits it brings,” said Sheratt.
Investigators say criminals are using artificial intelligence to duplicate someone’s voice or duplicate their image to make everyday conspiracies more believable. .
“They can give it movement and voice,” said Pedro Muñoz, a fraud investigator at the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office.

“You can replicate or create images that make people in incredibly terrifying situations look like your own children or grandchildren,” says Sheratt.
Sherat and Munoz are just two of eight agents in the Fraud and Counterfeiting Division of the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office.
They are busy learning different techniques of AI fraud and partnering with other agencies to share information about what they learn.
The Secret Service, the FBI, all other federal and local agencies, together we can tackle this issue head-on,” Sheratt said.
“So far the county has not had any cases. I think it’s only a matter of time before that happens,” Munoz said.
Investigators say calls should always be screened and secret codes passed on to family members.
“If they don’t know the safe words and jargon, they know it’s not really them,” Munoz said.
Munoz said he has already visited senior homes to warn them of the downsides. He plans to talk to seniors about his AI plans soon.
