LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) – The Lexington-Fayette metropolitan-county government has instituted regulations regarding the use of artificial intelligence by its employees, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
The Herald-Leader reported that Lexington’s chief information officer, Liz Rogers, said employees can use AI to help create documents, research and summarize materials.
According to the Herald-Leader, all products that use AI must be reviewed by human employees, who cannot use the technology to make decisions.
Employees will also not be able to enter sensitive information, such as addresses or health information, into the AI tool, the Herald-Leader said.
The city government uses Microsoft’s service package, which includes the company’s AI tool Microsoft Copilot. The Herald-Leader reported that the only AI tool city officials are allowed to use is Copilot.
The version of Copilot used by city employees has “more robust” privacy and security protections, the Herald-Leader said.
Employees can apply for exceptions to the city’s AI policy, which will be approved or rejected by Rogers’ office, the Herald-Leader said.
