No wonder traffic AI is one of the original’s biggest problems City: SkylineAnd today, Paradox and Colossal Order have revealed how they intend to tackle this problem. Cities: Skylines 2.
It’s no surprise that the first dev diary released for the game a while ago was all about the new road system. Because that was the root of the traffic problem. Today we will tackle the next layer of the problem.
In the new transportation AI system, four main factors, defined as “routefinding costs,” influence the route chosen by citizens. Time, comfort, money (including parking availability) and action. Unlike previous games where the shortest route was always chosen, it is the combination of these that determines the path that takes AI citizens to where they want to go.
Traffic accidents also happen in the new game, but you can prevent accidents by keeping the roads well maintained.
Watch the video below. The original game fell well short of that, so I hope Colossal Order manages to make the system reliable enough to enjoy without his mods.
Cities: Skylines II Releases for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5 on October 24, 2023. It will also be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one.
