As the race for elite talent continues, Cisco’s chief human resources officer says it’s “very difficult” to fill AI and machine learning operations positions at the company.

“There are very few players who are eligible, but the demand is very high,” Jones said.

“Companies are talking about what they’re doing and how they’re bringing AI into everything,” Jones said. “But in reality, they’re not doing anything interesting with their work or products.”

She said mobilizing executives like Jeethu Patel, Cisco’s president and chief product officer, helped secure some of these top candidates. She said if the company had a strong AI candidate, he would pick up the phone and call them.

“If there’s someone we’re really looking to hire strategically, we’re going to involve him,” Jones said.

Jones said Patel, whom the company plucked from the box in 2020, understands the relationship between having great people design a product and the success of that product.
