Program description:
Now in its sixth year, the institute brings together top researchers and advanced graduate students to build community and advance cutting-edge research ideas. This year’s organizers are Kawin Ethayarajh (Chicago Booth), Alex Imas (Chicago Booth), Sanjog Misra (Chicago Booth), Lindsey Raymond (Microsoft Research), Ashesh Rambachan (MIT), and Daniel Rock (Wharton).
Program goals:
- We introduce researchers to cutting-edge methods and datasets in AI (LLM, agents, coordination with human feedback, etc.) and how they relate to long-standing questions in prediction, experimental design, fairness and bias, and econometric theory. and
- We build intuition about how these methods can raise new questions for economists in fields such as macroeconomics, behavioral sciences, health, development, publics, labor, or applied microeconomics in general.
format:
AIE Summer Institute 2026 will be held directly on the University of Chicago campus.
The program for participating students consists of two parts.
- August 6th to 10th: Lectures, panel discussions, tutorials, office hours, and social activities.
- August 11th: Attend the AI and Economics Summer Conference and speak on current research topics.
Eligibility and participation:
Participation in the entire program is by application and limited to approximately 30 people with a Ph.D. PhD students and postdoctoral programs from 2024 onwards. Intended for candidates with a strong interest in economics, AI/ML/NLP and related fields (e.g. statistics). Participants are required to participate full-time, in-person, in the program from August 6th to 11th. Admitted students’ housing and program-related expenses are fully covered for the duration of the program. Travel funds are available on a limited basis.
