    Chinese AI startup Moonshot has announced Kimi K3, an open-weight model with 2.8 trillion parameters. The company says this is the largest model of its kind and one that can compete with the world’s leading Frontier AI systems.

    The release marks another milestone in China’s rapidly evolving open AI ecosystem and adds to growing evidence that the country’s developers are closing what was once thought to be a large performance gap with their U.S. counterparts.

    The announcement comes just weeks after the U.S. government pulled Anthropic’s Fable and Mythos models over security concerns, creating an unusual moment in the cutting-edge AI landscape. While U.S. companies continue to dominate the closed-model market, Chinese developers are increasingly differentiating themselves by releasing sophisticated open-weight systems that companies can download, modify, and deploy.

    Moonshot describes Kimi K3 as the first open weight model to approach the 3 trillion parameter threshold. Built for advanced reasoning, long-term coding, and knowledge-intensive work, this model also supports a 1 million-token context window, allowing it to process and retain significantly more information within a single prompt than previous generations.

    The company’s claims extend beyond scale. Moonshot said Kimi K3 offers performance comparable to Anthropic’s Fable 5 while outperforming Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8, OpenAI’s GPT-5.5, and GPT-5.6 Sol in GPU kernel optimization, a metric that allows AI software to efficiently utilize computing hardware to minimize latency and maximize throughput.

    Independent benchmarking providers also rank this model as the industry’s top performer. Arena.ai ranked Kim K3 #1 for its web interface building capabilities, while Vals AI ranked it #2 overall, behind Fable 5 and ahead of GPT-5.6 Sol. Artificial Analysis reported comparable performance to OpenAI’s GPT-5.5 and Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.8, especially on complex multi-step inference tasks.

    This announcement reinforces significant changes in China’s AI industry. Over the past year, companies like Z.ai, MiniMax, DeepSeek, and Meituan have accelerated their release cycles and steadily improved the capabilities of their models while reducing deployment costs. The strategy is beginning to call into question a long-held assumption among Western analysts that China’s AI systems are months behind leading U.S. models.

    Earlier this year, Z.ai’s GLM-5.2 surprised researchers by achieving benchmark results close to top US closed-source models, sparking new debate about how quickly China’s AI ecosystem is catching up.

    Cost remains one of China’s strongest competitive advantages. Lian Jie Hsu, Chief Analyst at Omdia, said: told Reuters Chinese models are attracting business interest because they are much cheaper to implement than their U.S. counterparts, he said. “You can run it for a fraction of the cost that OpenAI charges clients,” he says, but cautions that high parameter count should not be interpreted as a direct indicator of model quality.

    This warning may be particularly relevant to Kimi K3. Despite being open weight, its huge size makes self-hosting impractical for most organizations. Ryan Fedasiuk, a fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, estimated that running a model with 2.8 trillion parameters locally would require computing infrastructure costing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

    Moonshot said Kimi K3 introduces architectural improvements designed to increase computational efficiency and enable long-term coding tasks with minimal human intervention. The startup, backed by Alibaba and Tencent, is aggressively expanding amid fierce competition.
