China’s Ministry of Commerce is reportedly targeting widespread use of AI across the country’s consumer economy.
The ministry went on to announce 17 policy measures aimed at promoting this technology beyond industrial applications.
State broadcaster CCTV reported that the ministry sees AI technology as a means of economic stimulus and plans to use measures to integrate AI into homes and businesses.
As part of this plan, the company appears to be considering fundamental changes to the way consumer electronics are designed and sold.
The way devices operate is also a target, moving from functional tools to AI-integrated systems.
Advances in humanoid robotics in the home are an important issue, and the field is already attracting government and private investment.
Chinese companies such as Unitree and Ubtech have been cited as top contenders in the market. They compete to establish commercial positions in the industrial and consumer sectors.

On the services side, China wants to expand the presence of AI in retail services to the public and personal spheres.
CCTV quoted Lin Jian, deputy director of the Institute for International Trade Cooperation at the Ministry of Commerce, as saying that the measures are aimed at solving structural problems in the domestic service sector.
These include addressing challenges around high labor costs and insufficient standardization in service usage, Lin added.
The Chinese government is ramping up its AI plans, with Bloomberg reporting earlier this month that the government plans to invest $295 billion over the next five years in building data centers in the country.
