According to a survey by the Pew Research Center, the share of Americans using AI chatbots released in November 2022 has almost doubled since the summer of 2023. This includes the majority of 58% of adults under the age of 30.
Still, 66% of Americans don't use chatbots.

Who used ChatGpt?

Although ChatGpt usage is rising in age and education levels, some groups remain more likely to use it than others.
Differences based on age
As in the past few years, young adults stand out in their use of ChatGpt. Today, 58% of adults under the age of 30 say they have increased from 43% in 2024 to 33% in 2023.
- 41% of adults aged 30-49 use it.
- 25% of these 50-64 say the same thing.
- 10% of reports over 65 using CHATGPT.
Differences due to education
Adults with a higher level of formal education are more likely to have used ChatGpt than those who are educated. Approximately half of those who only have a bachelor's degree (51%) or graduate degree (52%) said they used ChatGPT compared to those with fewer stocks in college experience (33%) or below (18%).
How did Americans use ChatGpt?

Since March 2023, we have also asked about three ways people use ChatGpt. Growth is seen in all three areas.
Over the past two years, the share of employed adults who say they use chatgpt for their jobs has risen 20 percentage points to 28%. This includes an eight-point increase from last year.
Research from other centers shows that workers have mixed feelings about their use and hope that it will have a major impact on their work.
Take a look at other use cases of ChatGpt among adults in the US overall:

For these reasons, ChatGPT use has been rising across age groups since March 2023. However, younger adults are more likely to use ChatGpt in these ways than older adults. For example, 38% of employed adults aged 18 to 29 say they used ChatGpt at work. Here is:

Approximately 46% of all adults under the age of 30 have used it to learn something new. 42% use it for entertainment.
Still, some older people use ChatGpt in these ways. Approximately three adults ages 30-49 say they have used chatbots for learning and entertainment. The share of adults over 50 who say the same thing will fall even further.
Differences due to education
Adults with high levels of formal education also stand out by using ChatGpt in the workplace. Approximately 45% of employed adults with graduate degrees said they used it this way:
- 36% of bachelor's degree
- 25% of people with university experience
- 17% of people under high school education
Of all US adults, those with only bachelor's degree (34%) or graduate degree (39%) with the most adults in their studies are most likely to use chatbots for their studies.
How much do Americans in ChatGpt realize?

ChatGpt perception has risen over time. When we first asked in March 2023, 58% said they had heard at least a little. Now most Americans (79%) have heard about it at least a bit, including 34% they've heard a lot about it.
Differences based on age
The majority of adults of all ages have heard of chatbots. However, adults under the age of 30 stand out in their hearing a lot About it – 53% say this, compared to 15% of people over 65.
