Openai's new Sora 2 is the current #1 AI video generation app on both the Apple App Store and Google Play, so it creates headlines. When searching the App Store for the latest models of Openai, you may have noticed some SORA apps. That's because there are some fakes. Openai Sora actually says “Openai” and has cute clouds with starry eyes.
However, here is the catch. Once you download the app, you will have to wait to use SORA 2 unless you have an access code. Openai is slowly rolling out the Sora 2 due to a surge in traffic.
The hype about the Sora 2 launch is highlighted by Reddit users sharing code and online rumors about how to access it. Unfortunately, the fastest way to get access is to upgrade to ChatGpt Plus or Pro, but even so, you may not be able to enter unless you have an access code emailed directly from Openai.
I'd like to try out those cameos and see what the Sora 2 can do, but in the meantime, here are three AI video app alternatives to keep you busy.
Synthesia
With a personal selfie avatar, Synthesia is easy to imagine anywhere. You will have a video of you upload at least five selfies, then record your voice and chatting within three minutes at the moon, at a coffee shop, or at a local market.
AI-powered avatars mimic facial expressions, add realistic movements, and can be used on social platforms, messaging apps, and even video calls. Similar to Sora 2 cameos, users must agree to use images and voice in the video.
veo
Please take a look
VEO is Google Deepmind's latest AI video generator, built to turn simple text prompts into high quality movie clips. Unlike previous models, VEO can handle multiple shots, consistent characters, realistic physics and smooth camera movements. Simply tell them what you need and get professional grade videos.
I use VEO to create realistic videos and put myself in the trailer for TV sitcoms.
From short social clips to film-like sequences, Veo moves forward with AI-driven storytelling. Users can knit some videos together while maintaining the flow (and therefore the name flow). This is something that Sora 2 doesn't have. The maximum length of a SORA video is 10 seconds.
Whisk
Please take a look
Whisk is another Google Labs favorite. Perhaps the easiest video generator to use is to just drop the image. No test prompt is required. You can allow the addition of details. Users can get 50 generations for free.
Drop a reference image to suggest a subject, scene, or style. The system then “remixes” these inputs to whisk up new visuals. The result is not a literal copy, but an imaginative reinterpretation of input that has room to refine through text.
It's not necessarily accurate. Think quick conceptual iterations and visual brainstorming, not precise replicating. Sometimes it's quite apart.
Final Thoughts
Without a doubt, Sora 2 has got all the talk at the moment, but unless you have an invitation code, you'll probably be waiting for a while. The good news is that you can generate some pretty amazing videos right away from your selfie.
Tools like Synthesia, Veo, and Whisk each offer their own spins in AI video generation, but while not perfect, they're so fun (and free!).
They may not have the same hype factor as Openai's SORA 2, but they can keep your creativity flowing until your access code lands in your inbox. Try them out and let them know what you think in the comments.
