Can ChatGPT Brew Better Beer Than Humans? Pennsylvania Brewery Tests AI-Made Beer

AI News

Bristol, Pennsylvania (CBS) — You’ve probably heard of artificial intelligence. Computer technology has changed problem solving dramatically, and Bucks County breweries are now using computer technology to create beer recipes.

Second Sin Brewing used AI to generate their latest beer release. One question here is whether humans or robots can make better beer.

“This beer is called Jake Against,” said Jake Howell. “Here’s my recipe. Both beers worked great. I’m not going to hide my bias. I think mine tastes better.”

Literally Jake Against the Machine. ‘Jake Against’ is Second Thin Brewing’s newest IPA, crafted by brewmaster and co-owner Howell. However, the “machine” was generated using AI technology.

The idea to use ChatGPT came from co-owner Mike Beresky.

“I came up with this idea. Can I write a beer recipe? I know I can,” Beresky said. “And naturally, I thought, ‘Who’s as smart about brewing as Jake? Let’s find out. Let’s face them down.'”

The owners are lifelong friends and opened their brewery in Bristol in 2019. They’ve used AI in the past, but typically for social media. This is my first time using it in a beer recipe.

“Because there’s nothing more verbose than telling people you’re doing the same food truck on a particular weekend as the previous weekend, and that’s a way to spice things up,” Beresky said. “Just ask a question and it will answer. We asked it to write a recipe for the best Hazy IPA in the world. And that’s it.” It’s that simple. It gives you instructions and gives you the whole deal. “

Humans vs AI: Which Makes Better Beer?

Jake isn’t worried about putting his job in jeopardy, but he believes AI could help him in the future.

“If I’m short on time and can’t come up with a recipe, I know I can count on ChatGPT,” says Howell. “It’s like giving your grandma a recipe for her favorite cookie and you go bake it. It doesn’t taste the same as how she makes it.”

This is the first time AI has been used to brew beer in Pennsylvania, according to industry group Brewers of Pennsylvania.

Brewer Jake won Thursday night against AI by a score of 60-48.
