Building an AI business partner for small and medium-sized enterprises

AI For Business

Customer relationship management is a complex system. Reps need to be able to track all customer relationships (not just high-value ones), leads need to be clear and easy to review, and upsell opportunities need to be quickly identified and actioned. And because it has a lot of moving parts, there's a lot of room for error, especially for small businesses with limited infrastructure.

Amber AI, a Y-Combinator-backed AI sales development rep software solution, helps small businesses identify and mitigate many of the issues that come with customer management. Using artificial intelligence techniques such as large language models (LLMs), Amber is able to identify and prioritize issues that businesses need to address. Acting as a co-pilot for account managers, it also helps identify cross-sell and up-sell opportunities, increase net revenue retention, and build better relationships with customers.

A passion for technology and entrepreneurship

Prior to becoming a founder, Helen earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in computer science from Stanford University. “I got really interested in startups during my senior year of college,” she says. “When I was an Accel Leadership Fellow, my experiences in the program really sparked my interest in entrepreneurship.”

Stanford University's Accel Leadership Program (ALP) selects just 16 technically-minded graduate and associate degree students each year, providing Helen with valuable hands-on experience solving real-world business challenges. As an Accel Fellow, Helen worked closely with CEOs of fast-growing ventures and a team of fellow students to develop and present case studies on pressing business problems. Over the course of six months, she gained deep insights into startup strategy, organizational structure, fundraising, leading and scaling technology ventures, and operating models.

“The Accel Leadership Programme was a transformative experience for me,” Helen reflects. “I was able to apply the theoretical knowledge I gained in class to real-world situations. It also allowed me to build a strong network of like-minded entrepreneurs and mentors.”

Challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises

Small businesses face unique challenges when it comes to adopting artificial intelligence. For example, they typically operate with limited resources and often lack the in-house expertise needed to deploy and manage AI solutions. This makes them hesitant to adopt such technologies, especially when it comes to integrating AI into existing processes that are often less technical and more customized to their immediate community and customer base.

Amber AI offers a solution to these challenges as it is specifically made accessible to SMEs. It does not require advanced technical know-how or large upfront investments. It also has a simple, easy-to-use interface and can be easily integrated into existing customer platforms. It is a practical and ideal solution for SMEs who want to maintain a personal connection and attention with their customers.

How Amber Works

Amber AI uses LLM to assess the current situation (or “health”) of a business account, then takes direct action or alerts a human team member. For example, Amber may identify that a restaurant is experiencing a decline in orders, at which point she investigates the cause, discovers that pricing is no longer competitive, and suggests adjusted prices.

Amber can also survey accounts to detect if a customer is interested in additional services or ready to upgrade, making it the perfect tool for account managers who often manage thousands of SMB accounts at once. The workload of these reps often forces them to sacrifice the personal touch that SMBs are built on, which impacts their ability to upsell and cross-sell to customers. But Amber can intelligently create personalized offers for each account, helping brands increase revenue across their entire customer base.

What Amber AI can offer non-technical users

Non-technical small businesses often face a challenge: they have a wealth of data on their customers, but no way to analyze it holistically, and even if they do have modest, rudimentary AI solutions, they likely only work with quantitative data and require raw numbers to derive useful insights.

This is where Amber comes in. Comprehensive LLM allows you to analyze unstructured customer-generated conversational data, such as reviews, direct conversations, or person-to-person discussions. It allows you to understand people's sentiment, preferences, concerns, and objections, giving you insight into the trends, motivations, and issues your customers are really facing. This information helps you identify and address issues that quantitative data alone doesn't reveal.

Building AI business partners

Amber AI is a promising partnership for SMEs looking to integrate AI. By adopting Amber, SMEs can expect to improve customer interactions, operational efficiency, and strategic growth thanks to AI's ability to uncover problems and identify sales opportunities. Looking ahead, the outlook for Amber users is particularly promising, with plans to develop a text-based AI consultant specifically for SMEs, which will be provided free of charge.

For small business owners looking to use AI without the complexities that typically come with it, Amber AI is a viable and effective solution.
