The European Commission has announced an investigation into whether TikTok complies with EU rules after Poland warned that artificial intelligence-generated videos were promoting so-called “Polexit” (an abbreviation for Poland's exit from the European Union, a term modeled after the word “Brexit”), Warsaw reported. According to the same media report, Poland's Deputy Digitalization Minister Dariusz Standerski wrote to the European Commission in late December, asking for supervisory measures and possible legal action under the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA) over content that depicts young women wearing Polish national symbols and encourages Poland to leave the EU.

“The content disclosed poses a threat to the public safety, information security, and integrity of democratic processes in Poland and the European Union as a whole,” Standerski said in the letter, adding that the use of synthetic audiovisual material suggested that TikTok was not meeting its obligations as a “very large online platform.”

“The Commission has already sent requests for information to several online platforms, including TikTok, in March 2024,” a European Commission spokesperson said, asking for details of the measures taken to address AI-related risks.

Polish government spokesman Adam Schwapka said the videos were “without a doubt” Russian disinformation, pointing to what he said were Russian syntax in the recordings and arguing that the messages were aligned with Russian interests but opposed to Polish interests.

Earlier, analysts reported that they had identified hundreds of anonymous TikTok accounts amplifying pro-Russian rhetoric and backing radical political parties, and that complaints had been sent to EU authorities.

At the same time, TikTok also mentioned cracking down on deceptive practices.
