Albanian Prime Minister Eddie Rama proposed on July 18 that artificial intelligence (AI) could immediately play an important role in Albania's governance.
Currently, Albania is working to modernize institutions and reduce corruption as government digitalization and AI is seen as an important tool in these efforts. Tirana already uses AI to analyse where Albanian law analyzes from EU acquisitions, and is in line with European standards.
In a meeting with technology experts in cities in South Berat, Rama highlighted the potential of AI to improve transparency, efficiency and accountability in Albania's administration.
“Now, artificial intelligence could become the most efficient member of the government,” Lama said. “One day, we may even have a ministry that is fully run by AI, so there is no nepotism or conflict of interest.”
Although the proposal is in a conceptual stage, Lama said the idea deserves careful consideration under the country's Albania 2030 digital vision.
Rama also encouraged Albanian technology and startup communities to participate in the development of AI models that allow national ministers to be selected for artificial intelligence, and described them as the first step towards a future in which AI systems oversee government decision-making.
“If we can create an artificial intelligence model to elect a minister, it will be the first step towards the historic moment when Albania has the entire government with an AI minister and a prime minister,” he said.
The Lama also reaffirms his government's goal of Albania moving into a cashless society by 2030, aiming to fully digitize all financial transactions and public interactions. Achieving this would require a lot of effort to public awareness and digital skills development, he said, but the technology itself was already in place.
