Dr. Franz Dekker, CIO and Executive Vice President of the BMW Group, explains how this works in practice: “By combining our engineering datasets with Mistral AI’s model training capabilities, we are building specialized AI to support complex development tasks.”

Importantly, the BMW Group aims to use AI models that are specifically trained for industrial applications and therefore have capabilities that go well beyond the capabilities of regular AI. Known as large-scale industry models (LIMs), these are trained on industry-specific engineering and simulation data. Unlike typical AI systems, LIM directly incorporates domain expertise to deliver the exact technical expertise that vehicle development and crash testing relies on.

This is particularly relevant for collision simulations, which involve highly complex interactions between physics, material behavior, and data analysis. Specialized LIM can identify where a structure absorbs energy, how materials behave under stress, and what anomalies require further inspection.

AI is your co-pilot, but it cannot replace you. – Engineers will be able to navigate complex data environments faster and more deeply.
