Bill Gates to AI companies: You are overvalued and by a reasonable...

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates has once again warned that many highly valued artificial intelligence companies cannot survive in what he calls a “competitive” industry. As reported by CNBC, in an interview with CNBC's Tanya Breyer during Abu Dhabi Finance Week, Gates said that fears of an AI bubble are growing by the day and investors need to prepare for a correction. Gates also emphasized that the highly competitive nature of AI means only a few companies will emerge as long-term winners. “A significant percentage of those companies will not be worth that much,” Gates said.

Bill Gates talks about evaluating AI

“AI is the most important thing happening right now,” Gates said, but stressed that inflated valuations do not guarantee success. “Does that mean all companies with high valuations will be winners? No, it's going to be very competitive,” he explained. He added: “AI is just a bubble in the sense that not all of these valuations are going to go up eventually. Some companies are going to go down…a significant percentage of those companies aren't going to be worth that much.” Companies like Tesla and Palantir currently trade at price-to-earnings ratios (P/E) above 200, compared to the S&P 500's average of about 25. The disparity has fueled investor concerns, with global markets falling in November on fears of an AI bubble.

He pointed to the potential of AI in healthcare, education, and agriculture, areas in which his foundation is actively investing.Despite all these concerns, Gates reaffirmed his belief in the transformative potential of AI. He also described it as a “profound technology that will reshape the world” with applications across health care, education and agriculture.“Is this profound and real and brings all these benefits?
