German tabloid Bild plans to replace some of its editorial staff with artificial intelligence and “automated processes”. This is the latest example of introducing AI at the expense of human workers.

The Guardian reported on June 21 that Bild’s parent publisher Axel Springer SE said the move was part of a shift from print journalism to digital journalism, with a $109 million (€100 million) said it was combined with its revenue expansion plan.

Reportedly, about 200 jobs will be cut from July, and the company said to employees, “It’s disappointing for my colleagues whose jobs will be replaced by AI and automated processes in the digital world. We are parting ways,” he said in an email.

The company added that “roles such as editors, print production journalists, proofreaders, photo editors and assistants will no longer exist as they do today.”

The daily tabloid was launched in June 1952. In the 1980s, Bild reportedly sold more than 5 million copies per day. According to Mondo Times, Bild’s circulation dropped to 3.55 million copies in 2010. According to Media Impact, as of 2022, the paper newspaper’s circulation will be just over one million.

Cointelegraph reached out to Bild for comment but did not immediately receive a response.
