Better Business Bureau research finds that more than 90% of customer reviews mentioning AI services describe a negative experience

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (Editorial News Release/KY3) – Artificial intelligence is inevitable. New technology is everywhere: at work, at school, on computers, on phones.

While the benefits of having a personal assistant at our fingertips are welcome to many, others are concerned, especially as AI becomes a tool for both legitimate businesses and fraudsters.

Over the past three years, the Better Business Bureau has received more than 100,000 complaints, reviews, and fraud tracker reports mentioning artificial intelligence and automation. Although the categories in the report include many different types of issues, one clear concern emerges across all types of consumer sentiment data. That means customers often feel unheard or dissatisfied when dealing with automation and AI services.

A new BBB study titled “As Technology Booms, Over 90% of BBB Customer Reviews Mentioning AI Services Express a Negative Experience” examines reporting patterns and shares stories to help businesses explore whether AI tools are the right choice for them. The research also aims to help consumers distinguish between legitimate companies and fraudulent operations.

BBB’s International Investigations Initiative has been investigating patterns of fraud since 2021. Previous investigations have looked into occupational fraud, business fraud, online gambling, vehicle purchase, identity theft and other schemes.
